I have been drinking on 2nd Street for a long time. Since I turned 21 in this town — and maybe a little before that, but we’re not here to rat anyone out. The point is, Belmont Shore has been my neighborhood, my stomping ground, and honestly my therapy for more years than I care to count. I’ve celebrated birthdays here, cried into drinks here, made questionable decisions in alleys behind certain establishments here, and watched this little 14-block stretch grow into one of the best bar and restaurant scenes in all of Long Beach.

And happy hour in Belmont Shore? It’s a lifestyle.

I’ve been to almost every single one of these spots — some of them more times than I can remember, a few of them more times than I should admit. The patio is a definite plus, the food and service are okay, but you never quite know what you’re going to get on any given visit. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s just fine. Go for the patio, go for the late-night hours, and keep your expectations pleasantly flexible.

Anna’s Pizza Joint

Curtis, the owner, is on the floor hugging you, saying hi to all your friends like he’s known them his whole life. That’s not service — that’s community. Go. Bring everyone you know.

Look. Dogz is the bar you go to when you can’t taste the difference between Kamchatka and Ketel One anymore — and you know what? It doesn’t matter, because that’s not the point. The point is you want to get your drink on in a no-judgment, no-pretense zone, and Dogz delivers every single day. Sometimes a bar doesn’t need to be complicated.

George’s Greek Café on 2nd

This is the move when you want to feel like you’re somewhere far more glamorous than you actually are, in the best possible way.

Legend’s Sports Bar

Panama Joe’s and Legend’s are both Belmont Shore institutions, and I will say this plainly: if you don’t have at least one story of debauchery from one of these two places, do you even live in Long Beach? Legend’s smells like drunk Gen Xers and sticky testosterone and I mean that with complete affection. This bar has seen things. It has watched this neighborhood grow up while steadfastly refusing to do so itself. God bless it.

Let’s Yolk About It

Primarily a breakfast and brunch spot with a full bar and my sources say they host an occasional Jolly Hour on select Friday evenings. The schedule is a little loose, though, because I couldn’t find any concrete info on their IG or website, but a brunch spot that occasionally transforms into a Friday night vibe? Very Shore of them. Sometimes the best nights start somewhere completely unexpected.

Liv’s on 2nd

5327 2nd Street Social Hour: Wed–Fri 4–6 PM Oyster Mondays: 4–9 PM — Oyster & Seafood Platter Specials Beer & Wine

Oyster Mondays at Liv’s might be the most civilized way to start a week on 2nd Street. If you’re not treating yourself to oysters and a crisp glass of something cold on a Monday, I’m genuinely asking why not. The Social Hour window Wednesday through Friday is a solid bonus — but honestly, Oyster Mondays are the move.

Louie’s on 2nd

Osaka Story

Panama Joe’s and Legend’s are the twin pillars of Shore mayhem and I will not hear otherwise. If you don’t have a story from one of these places, you haven’t really lived in Long Beach. I say this as someone who was personally 86’d from Panama Joe’s once — there was an incident involving a day drunk that escalated well beyond anyone’s expectations, some spirited yelling in the alley out back, and a series of life choices that I will neither confirm nor deny in writing. I have since been welcomed back. We’ve all grown.

The weekend breakfast situation — Rise & Shine entrée for $7.99, a Bloody Hangover Bar, and bottomless coffee for $2.99 — is essentially Panama Joe’s acknowledging that it helped create the problem and is now offering a solution. Respect.

Quinn’s Pub

Quinn’s is a small neighborhood bar that’s perfect for hanging with the bros and watching a game — exactly the kind of no-frills spot that every strip needs. My sources say they have a happy hour, but I couldn’t confirm the details on their Instagram, so check with them directly before you make the trip.

Rakkan Ramen

Rakkan has a solid selection of comfort food ramen and a genuinely chill vibe — the kind of place where you slow down, warm up, and remember that not every happy hour needs to be a loud event. Ramen and a cold drink before the dinner crowd rolls in is self-care, and I will die on that hill.

Ribbro BBQ

Roe Seafood

You can people-watch, you can linger, you can pretend you’re somewhere with a lot more valet parking than 2nd Street actually offers, which is zero.

Saint & Second

If you can snag a spot on the second floor outdoor patio at Saint & Second, you have won that round of Belmont Shore. Lovely patio, solid drinks, genuinely friendly service — this is another great date night or girls night option, the kind of place that feels special without being overly-fancy about it. Come early, grab the good seats upstairs, and stay awhile.

Shannon’s Bayshore

Here’s the thing about Shannon’s — you don’t usually start your night there. Shannon’s is typically where you end up at last call, trying to find your phone that’s already in your hand, along with whatever’s left of your dignity. But happy hour until 9 PM? Nine PM? Okay Shannon’s, we see you. Maybe we actually start here and then circle back at the end of the night for a Shoot-the-Root to close it all out properly. Shannon’s is an OG and the Shore wouldn’t be the Shore without it.

Simmzy’s

Two happy hour windows a day. Simmzy’s has always shown up and it continues to show up.

Viaje runs happy hour seven days a week with a generous window on weekends that’s perfectly timed for the “we started early and we regret absolutely nothing” crowd — a crowd I have belonged to on multiple documented occasions. The name means “journey” in Spanish. Every good happy hour is one.

Zarape Cocina & Cantina

Zarape closes out the list with a daily four-hour happy hour window, seven days a week. Mexican food and cocktails with that kind of consistency is exactly the anchor a neighborhood strip needs. Zarape is a newer addition to the Shore but it’s already acting like it belongs, which is the right energy entirely.

Belmont Shore is a lot of things — beachy, walkable, a little chaotic on a Saturday night, exactly the right amount of wrong. But more than anything, it’s a neighborhood where people actually know each other. Where the owner is on the floor saying hi to your friends like family, where the bartender remembers what you drink, where the strangers at the bar next to you become part of your story whether you planned for it or not.

These 14 blocks on 2nd Street have been part of my story for a long time. I’ve watched spots come and go, watched new places earn their place on the strip, and watched the Shore keep being exactly itself through all of it. That’s not nothing. That’s actually kind of everything.

The Long Beach happy hour scene has no shortage of options, but there’s something about Belmont Shore specifically — the ocean breeze, the mix of longtime locals and fresh faces, the fact that you can walk from a wine bar to a whiskey lounge to a ramen spot without ever moving your car — that makes happy hour here feel like more than just a drink special. It’s the whole Long Beach city vibe.

So get out there. Pick a patio, find your barstool, start at Shannon’s or end at Shannon’s — honestly either works — and go make some memories on 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. Just maybe stay out of the alley behind Panama Joe’s.
