Asian Film Series at BJK Main Library

In conjunction with Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and this year’s “One Book, One Coast” program, join us for an engaging and action-packed double feature film series event! An introduction will be presented before each film, with discussion afterwards. Limited seating & 3D glasses available; first-come, first-served.
12:30 – 2:15 PM, we’re screening the 2025 arts documentary, BEAM ME UP, SULU, highlighting the life and inspirational legacy of Japanese American actor, author, and activist, George Takei. (This film supplements this year’s “One Book, One Coast” reading program book selection, THEY CALLED US ENEMY, also by George Takei.) “In 1985, Star Trek’s George Takei joined a group of dedicated fans to make a student film deep in the California wilderness—only for the footage to mysteriously vanish. Nearly 40 years later, BEAM ME UP, SULU unearths this lost film, revealing not just a piece of fan history, but a broader story of representation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for inclusion in media and society.” (www.kanopy.com) Directed by Sasha Schneider & Timour Gregory; not rated.
2:30 – 4:45 PM, we’re featuring the 2021 Academy Award-nominated Marvel Studios action-adventure film, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS — in eye-popping 3D! “Shang-Chi, the master of weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization.” (www.imdb.com) In English & Mandarin with English subtitles; directed by Destin Daniel Cretton; starring Simu Liu, Awkwafina, & Tony Leung Chiu-wai; rated PG-13
